We got a new plane!
We are very excited to have a new plane! Tom Frasca graciously donated a 1969 Experimental Great Lakes. After Jeff and the Frasca crew disassembled the Great Lakes aircraft, Mike Nightingale drove it home for us.
This has been an exciting time for the Academy as some of our volunteers were able to meet up at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh!
Meanwhile, back at the Academy hangar, volunteers are busy between maintaining our planes and nurturing the next generation in their aviation journey.
We had our first air show, Wings Over Camarillo. This was our first year at Camarillo and we had a blast! We sold rides to happy passengers and enjoyed sharing our mission with the air show attendees.
This month’s volunteer spotlight is Laila.
Laila, how did you hear about the Academy?
I heard about the Academy through research. I was looking for a hands on program that allowed kids to work in depth on the planes versus just watching someone do it.
When did you start volunteering with the Academy?
August 2022, so two years ago.
What’s your favorite thing about the Academy?
My favorite thing about the Academy is how much I’ve learned from sheet metal to fabric work. I get to practice those skills on our planes when needed. Another thing is we get to fly the planes we work on which is rewarding after you’ve put time into fixing it.
Can you walk us through your aviation adventures so far?
I finished my first year of college at Mt Sac and I am working on becoming an Aircraft Maintenance Technician which allows me to get my A&P certificate. Hopefully I’ll have my pilot’s licence in the future.
Thanks to all our generous donors and volunteers for making this a great summer so far! We are looking forward to several air shows coming up soon! Stay posted for more air show updates!
