History
Cal-Aerofab Flight Academy was formed by a group of young passionate aspiring pilots wanting to learn the fundamentals of restoring and maintaining vintage aircraft. The group started by working on company aircraft at California Aerofab. As the numbers grew, the idea of developing a non-profit to grow the next generation of aviators who love to fly, fix and restore aircraft.
The first project the Flight Academy completed was restoring a de Havilland Chipmunk. It started with four student pilots wanting to learn more about aircraft systems and structural design. The Chipmunk had been recently acquired by California Aerofab, and served as a perfect project for these students. It arrived disassembled in need of a new engine, paint job and a good inspection. Within nine months, with the help of their mentors, the Chipmunk was returned to flying condition after sitting for more than 15 years. Eventually, the four students were able to fly the airplane and earn tailwheel endorsements.
Every one of us is truly passionate about aviation, and seeking to encourage all other curious people we may come across along the way, regardless of background or origin. We founded ourselves in a quest to pass on knowledge and provide opportunities to others that are otherwise impossible in the aviation community.
Today, the group flies and maintains a Cessna 150, Luscombe 8A, North American T-6, PT-17 Stearman, de Havilland Chipmunk, Stinson L-5, Aeronca Champ, and a Beechcraft Twin Bonanza. In a mission to grow, the group looks to restore and fly more aircraft to help inspire and pave the way for future aviators!
